Agreeing to do my first exhibition and facing the fear…
I’m really delighted to tell you I am taking part in my very first exhibition at the end of this month in The Grainstore, Ballymaloe, Shanagarry, East Cork. Along with 6 other artists, the title of our exhibition is ‘The Road Not Taken’.
I was asked to participate at the beginning of the year so it was quite the challenge balancing life.
Firstly I jumped at the chance and then ‘the fear’ set-in. ‘Can I do this?’, ‘do I have time for this?’, ‘what am I going to paint’, ‘how can I produce enough work for an exhibition’ and more of the same. My mind ran away with me and my confidence dipped. Thankfully I have a very encouraging husband and together we made time for me to do this, which I am very grateful.
The idea of putting your art on public display will always be difficult but I try to remind myself of something I read some time ago…“What separates artists from ex-artists is that those who challenge their fears, continue, those who don’t, quit.”
So challenge my fears I did and now the countdown is on to exhibition on the 28th of October.
I’ve created landscapes in soft pastel on paper and also oil paintings. In the process I even came up with something completely new by painting tiny oil on coins.
I have definitely grown during this process and I’ve learned fear that your next work will fail is a normal part of art making and I’ve embraced it.
“To make art is to sing with the human voice. To do this you must first learn that the only voice you need is the voice you already have.”
